Campania District School Newsletter – written by student leader Maddi McMahon.
Our last Newsletter for Term 2; it's sure been a busy term. The last few week has seen our Grade 10 students attend Rosny and Claremont College Taster Days, which included trying out subjects like VET (hands on) construction, electro-tech and beauty courses. The students tried doing Art, Music, English, Math, Spports and more.
The student leaders planned and hosted a winter ‘cosy’ free dress day. Many students liked this idea and we ended up raising $200 towards new bikes for the school.
The School Association held a primary disco in the school gym. What a fantastic turn out of students and what fun they all had. Thanks to the staff who stayed back to help the School Association.
We held a whole school assembly, hosted by the Grade 10s where student leaders signed the pledge and were presented their badges and certificates. Some students were presented awards for their great learning. The 3/4 students were brave and went on stage and showed their fantastic artwork made with Mrs Markham. Miss Pearson and a few of her Grade 8 and Grade 9 students did a very impressive science experiment. Thanks to our familes for coming along to share our success.
We hope everyone has a safe and fun holidays ready to come back for Term 3.
Term 3 will start Monday 22nd July.
In their Chemistry unit Grade 9s have investigated the law of conservation of matter. Grade 8s are comparing the difference between an element, mixture, and compounds.
Ms Pearson is very grateful for the very brave students who conducted a chemistry demonstration in assembly.
Grade 9/10 Three-Course Meal Project
Grade 9/10 Three-Course Meal Project
This term, the Grade 9/10 Food Studies class had the exciting opportunity to design and execute a three-course meal. Students were required to:
- Collaborate in teams of three.
- Create a budget.
- Design their menus and invitations.
- Plan a table setting.
- Practice their meals.
Each student invited a special guest to enjoy the meal. They all worked diligently and should be very proud of their accomplishments.
Introducing our wonderful Professional Support Team
School Psychologist
My name is Maddie and I’m the school psychologist at Campania District School. My job is to support students in their learning and engagement at school.
My aim is to be a friendly and supportive person who students can approach at school, and my office a safe and welcoming place where they can speak openly and without fear of judgement. Students can see me about a variety of matters which are impacting on their learning, such as anxiety, depression, stress, and low self-esteem. Students can self-refer to see me for counselling, but typically require a consent form to be filled out by a parent or guardian. Sessions with me are typically around 30-45 minutes in length with the number and frequency depending on the student’s individual needs.
Please note that referrals for psychological assessment must be made by school staff and are not accepted from parents and guardians.
I’m eager to continue working alongside the fantastic professional support staff to support the mental health and wellbeing of Campania’s students.
My days on site are Wednesdays and Thursdays.
School Social Worker
Hi I am Leisa, the School Social Worker. I am at Campania District School on Tuesday and Wednesdays. Below are a list of some of the services I currently provide, with the aim of supporting attendance and engagement and wellbeing for all students.
- early intervention programmes including counselling and group work
- liaison/mediation between home, school and/or other agencies
- referral to, and liaison with, other community agencies
- provide information and resources to students, parents, teachers and other agencies
- limited financial assistance with school uniforms in exceptional circumstances
- support and advice regarding flexible education provisions.
School Speech and Language Pathologist
I am Sarah and I work with students who:
• are difficult to understand when speaking
• have difficulty with understanding language (eg. question, instructions)
• have difficulty expressing themselves
• stutter
• have difficulty with eating and drinking
• have complex communication needs
• have difficulty with literacy
• have difficulty with social skills
Students are typically referred to me by their teachers and I assess, and provide school based and home based therapy, groups sessions and individual therapies that may be supported by a Teacher Assistant.
School Nurse
My name is Megan and I have been a school health nurse for the past 6 years. I have worked in district schools and primary schools during that time. What I love about being a school health nurse is the interactions with healthy, lively children and teenagers about an arrange of health topics. The health topics have a direct impact on students’ lives and I enjoy making these topics fun and exciting to learn about. The health screens I complete ensure students are growing healthy and assist with any physical disadvantages such as needing prescription glasses. These screens are so important for students to be able to engage, focus and enjoy school learnings.
The focus and service areas I can provide are:
· Promotion of good health and wellbeing.
· Kindergarten, vision and hearing screening
· Local, state and national health promotion initiatives.
· Health education aligned with the Australian Curriculum. This includes healthy relationships, addictions and risk behaviours.
· Consulting with schools regarding the management of complex medical conditions.
· Supporting schools to address any medical issues that may be impacting learning.
· Drop-in clinics for senior secondary students to empower their health choices. School Health Nurse Program - Department for Education, Children and Young People (decyp.tas.gov.au)
My day on site is Thursday.

Hello neighbours! – from Brighton High School
Thank you for such a warm welcome into the Southern Midlands, Brighton, Derwent networks, communities and partnerships of which our new school is now a member!
We are a school built for the young people of Brighton Primary School, Bagdad Primary School and Kempton Primary School, and for those families that reside within these in-take areas.
In response to our most common queries:
- Which Grades? We are waiting on a decision form the Minister about which year groups will start in 2025 – we are hoping for an announcement soon!
- Can I enrol? We are not taking any out-of-area enrolments as we ensure capacity for the fast-growing community of our in-take area.
We look forward to strong and exciting partnerships with our neighbouring school communities into the future.
